Databricks Is Bringing a Spreadsheet Into Genie
Databricks bought Row Zero and says it will put its spreadsheet in Genie. The aim is current, governed data without making another stale copy.

Databricks bought Row Zero, a company that makes spreadsheets for large data sets that stay connected to live sources. Databricks says it plans to put Row Zero’s spreadsheet inside Genie, its AI coworker.
This is an announcement, not something people can use in Genie today. Still, it is worth watching because a lot of business work still ends up in a spreadsheet.
That might be a margin check, a sales forecast, or the first pass at explaining why a number moved. The person doing the work can see the formulas, change an assumption, and spot a question that needs an answer.
Keep the data with the work
The problem starts when that spreadsheet becomes a file someone downloaded last week, sent around, and never traced back to its source.
Databricks says Row Zero will keep each person’s permissions in place, refresh from live sources, limit exports, allow writeback, and show what an agent did in a spreadsheet people already understand. The idea is that a team can move from a question to a pivot, model, or chart without making another stale copy of the data.
Those are Databricks’ claims. The product still has to earn them. A spreadsheet tied to current data can still have a bad definition, a faulty formula, or an assumption no one checked.
AI does not fix that. It can make the work faster, and it can make a mistake look finished faster too.
For the person who has to make the call, the useful part is simple: they should be able to see where the number came from and what changed before they act on it.
